Year 10s Help Year 7s Feel Welcome

At Paired Reading Club

Paired Reading takes place every Tuesday during morning registration in the LRC. It's a great way for year 7s to get to know the older years, whilst reading fun books! Some of our volunteers give us their views on how it's felt to be part of Paired Reading....

I’ve found that with paired reading with year sevens, I have been able to help (and make friends with!) the girl I’ve been reading with. I’ve noticed my partner improve her reading, and grow even more confident each week. It’s a really nice way to start my Tuesday morning, which would otherwise be incredibly long and boring!

I remember being quite in awe of the years above and it’s really nice to see my partner in the corridors around school and be able to say hi! The great thing about this scheme is that I absolutely love reading myself, so it’s fantastic to be able to help someone enjoy it just as much as I do. I love helping in a scheme that’s entirely centred around one of my favourite hobbies.

I have really enjoyed this experience, helping the year 7s read. It has helped me become a more mature and responsible person. I have got a great feel of achievement as I have helped the year 7s to read better and have helped them understand words. It is a relaxed atmosphere sitting on the comfy sofa’s, them reading and us listening helping them when they get stuck. It is nice to know someone in year 7, when we walk around in the corridor and we say hi to each other. It’s a good start to the day to get me in the mood for school. It is a nice feeling to know that I am helping someone which could benefit them so much in there later life.

I have really enjoyed working with the year 7. It has changed me as a person. Doing paired reading made me feel more like a grown up and someone who is making a difference to somebody else’s life. It’s an amazing experience and I would love to carry this on. Reading with my year 7 is great. We sit down on the comfy chairs in the LRC and I listen to her read. When she gets stuck on a word, I help her and try and pronounce the word. I also make sure she understands what she is reading. It’s really fun. We even make jokes about the book so I can really get her engaged into the book. Sumaya 10P

Reading with Rashaan was an amazing experience and a great opportunity. Watching his reading skills get better has made me proud. I’m so grateful for getting the chance to help and change the lives of others. You stay with the same partner and get a bond. Midnight 10C
